In the midst of a storm the Demon appears. Sick with boredom, he seeks a woman's love. He sees Tamara, dancing with some girls on the eve of her marriage, and is struck by her beauty. Prince Sinodal, on his way to marry Tamara, is held up by the storm and camps in a wild gorge. The Demon arranges for Sinodal to be attacked and killed by brigands. When Tamara hears of his death, she begs her father (Prince Gudal) to let her enter a convent. But the Demon pursues her even into the privacy of her cell. At first he is thwarted by the Angel, but then he manages to kiss Tamara. She dies and the Angel carries her soul to Paradise, leaving the Demon despairing and alone.
